What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a painful condition caused by compression of the sciatic nerve as it exits the lumbar spine. The most common causes are lumbar spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, degenerative disc disease, or muscle spasms in the buttocks or back.

Any one of these conditions can put pressure on the sciatic nerve root. The resulting compression causes the nerve to send out pain signals that can be strong and impact the quality of life.

Why Does This Happen to the Sciatic Nerve?

The sciatic nerves are two major nerves that travel from your spine through your hips, buttocks, and down your legs. When your spine is healthy and within its proper alignment, you won't feel pain and everything works as it should. However, conditions that are the result of age, disease, and damage can cause your vertebrae to deteriorate or the discs between your vertebrae to bulge. The end result is that pressure gets put onto the sciatic nerve and pain signals are sent out.

How Come the Pain Isn't Consistent?

Most people with sciatica experience pain on one side of their body. It's rare, but not unusual, for someone to experience the pain on both sides. Spinal compression is usually uneven and the vertebrae look like it's been tilted to one side when seen on an X-ray. That tilt results in one side of the body being affected instead of both.

Some sufferers of sciatic nerve pain don't feel it all the time. There can be long periods where there is no pain and it feels like the problem is gone, only to have it return suddenly. This is because the spine is always in motion and sometimes corrects itself without intervention. But there are no guarantees that the correction will stay on its own and the condition that caused the issue will return at a moment's notice. Chiropractic care can help with correcting the condition and relieving the pain.
